Gov. Gen. Mary Simon apologized for the fact that Peter Savaryn was awarded the Order of Canada in 1987. Saravyn, who died in 2017, was the chancellor of the University of Alberta and served in the same Nazi SS unit as Ukrainian veteran Yaroslav Hunka. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government is ‘looking carefully’ at declassifying records of ex-Nazis who immigrated to Canada.
