Asylum Seekers Forcibly returned from Italy to Greece through Secret Prisons

How These Canadians are Coping With Rising Costs

Forcibly moved from Italy to Greece

Asylum seekers trying to reach Europe have described being forcibly moved from Italy to Greece on makeshift prisons in ferries.

An Al Jazeera investigation working with Lighthouse Reports and other media partners has uncovered evidence of the illegal forced return of asylum seekers, including minors, in degrading and inhumane conditions, from Italy to Greece. The investigation has found evidence of unofficial detention facilities on board commercial ferries on routes between the two countries.

The Italian government has insisted it no longer forcibly returns asylum seekers after a 2014 European Court of Human Rights decision. Yet our investigation has heard testimony from eight people who’ve been forcibly returned from Italy to Greece in just the past 12 months.
