Ireland Under Attack, 1977
The brigade of the Southern Command are deployed in Sligo for a military exercise to prepare for an attack on Ireland.
The Southern Command is the Irish army’s strategic reserve, held back at the early stages of a conventional battle. They are only called into action when a decisive strike is called for.
In Sligo the men from Cork’s 4th infantry battalion, Limerick’s 12th battalion, and other reserve units carried out an exercise in the Ox Mountains. Fighter jets, spotter planes and helicopters were also called upon to provide vital fire power.
The drill was carried out to test the soldiers in the event of an attack on Ireland.
The enemy, that thinly disguised super power known as “Red Lands” had been repulsed.
