For years, the US has insisted that the Crimean peninsula is a part of Ukraine despite being under Russian control since 2014. However, after the Russian invasion, the US held a hard line against providing Kyiv with the kind of weapons it needed to target Crimea. At the beginning of the invasion, the US and its western allies were reluctant to provide enough military support to Ukraine. However, Russia’s brutal violence and attacks across Ukraine has forced Washington and its allies to change their stand. Both US officials and authorities in Kyiv believe that Putin is using the peninsula as a base to target Ukraine. Is the US now looking looking to prepare Ukraine’s next counteroffensive?
